When was the last time you bought a piece of fashion clothes? The one that magically popped-up on your Facebook page. The one that looked great in the shop. The one that your friend told you is the must-have thing right now.
And when was the last time you felt the remorse of spending your money for what now sits in your closet, worn one time, or not at all?
Studies show that most people wear only anywhere between 10-20% of the clothes they own regularly. Even if you add seasonal and special occasion items (winter coats, sports gear, formal suits and gowns), it’s still below 40%.
“In the 1970’s, people were exposed to about 500 ads per day. At present, people see roughly 5,000 ads per day.” (USC November 17, 2023)
Of course, the fashion industry wants you to buy more clothes, shoes, accessories by creating styles of a season, the color of the year, even new words like “athleisure”, all promoted by ads, TV, and influencers on social media. And they want you to believe that if you don’t follow the trend, you don’t belong.
Take a moment and pause with this thought: your personality is not defined by the clothes you wear, or what others judge you on. The clothes you wear should make you feel comfortable and compliment the person you are. And as such, yes, there can be changes over time as you develop over time. But the trigger, the right moment for change comes from within you, and not from the high-gloss magazine cover or the latest social media post.
