Just Enough

Having enough is different from having too much or too little. But what exactly constitutes enough? What if I’m going to run out of what I need tomorrow? It’s better to have two than none, right?

However, the mentality of buying and keeping items “just in case” and “to be safe” can easily lead to a cluttered home. Cabinets and pantries are stuffed with cleaners, toiletries, household items, and food cans.

“Only today: buy one get one free, great deal!” But here’s the catch: you’re spending money on items you don’t need. You end up running out of space and stowing things where you can’t remember where you put them. You end up buying them again, and you’re not saving money.

Most of us have easy access to everyday items when we need them. We don’t need to build large stocks. And is it really that bad to run out of bath cleaner for a day or two?

Here are some recommendations to help you avoid having too much:

1. Purge your home to find all the consumables spread throughout.

2. Consolidate half-used containers (only like items, don’t mix them).

3. Create dedicated spaces for cleaners, toiletries, non-perishable food. This will help you easily see what you still have.

4. Start a shopping list and stick to it. Only buy what you’ve written down. This will make you less susceptible to special offers.

5. Check your usage. For example, a gallon-sized window cleaner needs the entire space for the entire year until it is used up.
