Situation Clutter

Sometimes you’ll end up in a situation that feels overwhelming. You don’t even recall how you got there. You can’t think clearly anymore, everything is confusing, you’re upset with yourself, and things keep escalating.

It’s good to have a few tools at your disposal to break the cycle. Try this next time:

  • Separation: If you can, physically step out of the situation—go to the next room, head outside, or take a quick walk. If you can’t leave, take a step back. Look up and to the side; it will make it look like you’re deep in thought while giving you a necessary pause.
  • Foundation: Find solid ground, physically and mentally. A quick way is to stand firmly with your feet hip-width apart. Straighten your posture, relax your arms at your sides, and take a deep breath in, hold it, and breathe out. Repeat three times.
  • Recalibration: With this space and stability created, take a helicopter view. Many situations look completely different when viewed from a distance, and the break from Separation and Foundation gives your brain room to reset.

Practice this beforehand so it feels natural when you need it most.
