“If we don’t use the thing, or we don’t love the thing, it is clutter.”
All too often we cling to our belongings for no good reason other that we own them already. And we forget to do the math. It’s not about the money we spent already (and won’t get back just because we keep it).
The math is the COST OF KEEPING.
The cost of physical space clutter takes up in our closets, cabinets, garages, or even storage units. The cost of time we spend sorting, searching, organizing. As’ The Minimalists’ state: “Organizing is well-planned hoarding”. The emotional cost to be constantly reminded that we should take the time to clean this up and get rid of it, over and over again. And the loss of time we could spend on things that really bring joy and fulfillment to our life.
There is a term for this, and it is called the “Endowment Effect” or “Reluctance to Trade”. In short words is states that you are more likely to value an item higher when you already own it, than what you would pay for it when to purchase it. This ultimately leads to you keeping needless things in your possession by overrating the true value.
Do your own math. And when you now think “enough is enough”, you are in the right state to get started. We’re here to help.
