$150 – only you know how many hours you needed to work to afford this item. It looked so great, so shiny, so attractive in the shop. And Janet has one, too, and how enthusiastic she is about it. Not to mention the thousands of 5-star reviews.
‘It’? The fancy blender on your countertop. The gown in your closet. The gadget on your desk. The thing that you absolutely wanted, but now takes up space in your home; that makes you feel guilty every time you look at it.
And still, you hold on. $150! I cannot throw $150 away. That is too much.
Well, you already lost the money. You traded hours of your life for it. Unlikely, the shop takes it back or you can sell it (even with a loss). There is nothing you can do. ‘It’ is now just sunk cost.
But wait, you can still recover something. You can gain back the space it takes now. Maybe, you can make someone else happy when donating. You can get ease of mind by not having to think about it anymore. And you can take the learning to pause and think before spending on any next ‘it’.
Clutter does not become more useful if you cling to it. Let it go.
